The Importance of the Edge - the Meeting Place
In my study of art I have come to recognize the importance of edges. This is the space where two tones or shapes meet. It is a critical transition point between two very different objects or spaces in a painting. How the edge is handled, whether softly blended or sharply defined, influences the overall experience the viewer has of the artwork, and contributes to the success or failure of the painting.
At this time of political transition in our country, I see this as a metaphor for the success of our two party democratic system, and a guide to how the politicians (and citizens) on either side must engage with each other for successful outcomes for the nation as a whole. The "edge" is the tenor or tone of interaction between two opposing views. The "edge" is the place where pathways to positive compromise in political conflicts may have potential to be reached. The "edge" is the place where collaboration can occur and where it requires a commitment to create the beautiful outcome. The "edge" demands technique, understanding, and wisdom gained from those who came before in order to make that tangent point successful. There is always the possibility of beauty in conflicting politics. This is what democracy is all about. That point of tangent, when engaged in with respect, can be crafted to bring more balance into a seemingly chaotic system.
How to meet that most challenging edge? Respect, listening, faith in democracy, and most of all listening to the needs of Americans. Always holding the "people's" well being in the forefront of collaborative efforts. The "edge" requires courage. Opposing sides must meet there and work out their dance to the benefit of people in this country.
I am confident that the dream of making something beautiful is optimistic, progressive, and ultimately possible. The work required is hard. But that edge is the lure toward beauty...and greatness. We must keep trying, and be inspired by the process.
