About the Artist

My creative journey began in childhood.  I often wiled away hours doodling faces of characters in storybooks, cartoons, and animals, filling up sketchbooks and playing with paints.  By high school my parents had signed me up for the Famous Artists Correspondence Course which taught me about different mediums and techniques.   Although my college studies focused elsewhere, I managed to  include art and life drawing classes on my schedule.  While raising a family and managing a career, I sketched and painted as often as possible.  After an early retirement I began to study and focus on art again, taking classes from a nationally recognized artist in the Kansas City area,  Loreta Feeback.  She introduced me to the beauty of soft pastels.

There was a tradition in my family of artistic expression.  My Mom loved the 19th Century impressionists, her mom was a watercolor artist, her father sketched with pen and ink, and her sister was a painter. Nature and people inspire me.  I grew up in coastal Northern California and am often compelled to paint scenes that capture the brilliance of being seaside.  I now live in south Central Texas where the sky is big and ever changing.  Cloudscapes are my recent inspiration.  I have been lucky to live in the Midwest and Northeast, as well.  Though I find inspiration in my nearby natural environs, I love to travel and discover beauty wherever I roam.

My impulse is to capture through art the wonder and enchantment in nature and life.  Recently, this has led me toward expressing in a more abstract manner.  Mostly self taught, I continue to study and train through workshops, books, dvds, and online videos.  Making art is curative, it requires  patience, focus, and understanding what inspires us.  It is meditative, and leads towards moments of “flow” or being in the “zone”.  Creating art reminds me of the divine in us and all things.
