"Paint the way you are"

I wanted to share the wise words my Aunt Waneta wrote down and lived by.  She was born in 1918 yet had the spirit of a modern woman throughout her life.  She raised a family, had a a marvelous sense of humor, lived in the Midwest, and began painting in watercolor "in earnest" after her children were grown.  A lifelong resident of a small town on the Mississippi River, she painted the farmlands, waterways, flowers, and people in her life with graceful expression and joy.  Her family was from Scotland and both she and my Mom, her sister, had a strong individualism that influenced their art and lifestyle.

Here is a page from her watercolor sketchbook:

In this day of digital writing, it is always an inspiration to see the words written by hand on plain paper in times past, as their importance to the writer is evident.  "Paint the way you are" - or, as I've heard lately "paint your passion" - we all study the masterworks of other artists, but ultimately our most rewarding creative outcomes occur when we do just that!
